Hi,

whops ... we miss this post ...

This'll take some development to implement, but sure it's possible.

Other solution would be to use gd-lib and php - you should be able to resize remote jpgs.

It's on my list for final stage now.

We've been doing similar things in PHP but lately the CRC's appear not to work (we suspect they may have changed).

Or it's possible that the file being downloaded isn't complete - i.e. we catch it mid-write - we're not sure.

Hi.

I use the thumbalizr service to generate screeshots for my del.icio.us page (via my greasemonkey script (http://www.johanronstrom.se/projekt/delicious-thumbnails/)).

Sometimes I bookmark images (as opposed to the pages that contain it). When the thumbalizr creates the screenshot the result (naturally) looks like this:
http://www.thumbalizr.com/api/?url=http://www.civilization.ca/media/docs/images/60s06b.jpg&width=120

So, my request is this. Could the service recognize an image link and just make a resize instead of a screenshot? Possibly even with the option of "white borders, crop or stretch" in the API.

Any idea of when we can likely expect the Beta version, and what that is likely to support?

We'd be willing to start paying right now if all it could do was:

* Remove the "powered by" label
* Return a response header saying either done / queued / failed

Having played around with this a little - it doesn't look like the HTTP headers for the "please wait" images are any different to the generated images.

In other words, you cache the please wait messages for a day. Wouldn't say 30 seconds be more appropriate?

Hi Guys,

that's exactly what we're doing :-) My other projects are finished now so I'll start to finalize thumbalizr beta next week. Within beta phase, we'll change to API key which allows us to provide individual functions. If you want, you can move to beta before we release it to public. I'll keep you updated.

I second that.

Ideal service from my perspective would be:

* No "powered by" label
* A way of querying the state of a thumbnail (via XML/JSON whatever) so that we knew when the thumbnail was taken, if it was taken. This way we could have our own message instead of your "image queued", and can add our own caption ("screenshot taken on ...")
* Remote call to 'force' a retake of thumbnail (just add to the queue)
* (Ideal) Your license to allow us to download screenshots for our own image processing server-side (not fussed about caching, but we'd like to superimpose, do image recognition etc). Most of these services only allow you to pass straight to the client.

We've looked around and not found much that can even do the decent sized screenshots like Thumbalizr, but the "powered by" is a killer for us in a commercial product.

Sort this out and we'd have a lot of business for you (email me if you like).

Why don't you offer a paid version of your service? I think many people would pay for this if the screen generation queue time was cut down significantly (maybe a few seconds) and the "powered by..." label was removed. Offer it for a penny for every N screen grabs.

Hello

I find this very useful, and by far the quickest tool for this as for now!

I have two feature requests.

* I'd like a http-get option for screen port size. Most sites I use thmbalizr on has a static width of about 800px, and that makes the preview mostly background. A "...&sps=800" where you can choose a screen port width between 500 and current (1200?).

* I would also like for a boolean option to put the thmbalizr logo at the top of the image instead of the bottom (now that is has to be there)

I have made a small greasemonkey script using your sevice to show thumbnails of my del.icio.us bookmarks! It will soon be published here.

After a long search, I find your service to be the only one that is doing what I want, I have been using firefox screengrab! extension, but being an opera user, I don't really want the need to have firefox installed, and run it just for that.

However, I do not feel your service is still a good replacement, for the simple fact that the output image format is in .jpg, a crappy quality .jpg image, wich for me (and others I know of) is not really an option, as a good quality picture is needed, so I would recommend an option (or even the default) to have the images in .png format, because quality can always be reduced if needed, but it cannot really be enhanced when it is that bad.

Why doesn't thumbalizr output http headers telling browsers they can cache the image for, say, 1 month? This will save thumbalizr A LOT of bandwidth and will give the users improved speed experience!

Hi, I created a little PHP function to check if the thumbnail has been created and is no longer showing the temporary thumbnail.

function isNewThumb($url)
{
$thumbalizrImageCRC = 1342048557;
$fp = fopen($url,"rb");
$tcheck = fread($fp,1024);
fclose($fp);
$tCRC=0;
if ($tcheck)
$tCRC = crc32($tcheck);
return !($tCRC == $thumbalizrImageCRC);
}

Ok, I know this is tricky if the temporary thumbnail image changes, but for now it helps. And in if the temp thumb changes anyway, you only have to recalculate the CRC. The CRC is calculated by using the first 1024 bytes of the file.

Thanks for this great service, keep up to good work !

Hi, it would be nice to be able to specify that the thumbnail should be re-created even if it already exists. This to accommodate the ever changing website home pages. Don't know if you already have some kind of caching mechanism built-in.

There will be a supported mode parameter in a later stage of thumbalizr. Currently the page mode is only supported by the online interface.

Is there any 'mode' parameter for the api?
The default value seems to be 'screen' mode to catch the pics.
tks.

Hi aproka,
at the moment there is no way to detect the status of a picture, if it is in qeued mode or already served. Nice idea, though - we will consider it in the next version :)
